UNIT 4: OUR CUSTOMS AND TRADITIONS Lesson 1: Getting started I/ OBJECTIVES By the end of the lesson, students can: to listen and read a conversation between the teacher , Nick and Phong about customs and traditions 1. Knowledge: a. Grammar : should and should’nt review have to b. Lexical items : typesof customs and traditions c. Pronunciation: cluster : /spr/ and /str/ 2. Skills: - Listening, Speaking, Reading,Writing and interactive skills 3. Attitude: - Cooperation, respect, having right and friendly attitudes with friends, teachers in the new school 4. Quality and competence: - Be confident and friendly with the new school environment - Develope listening, speaking skills and cooperative interaction II/ TEACHING AIDS (MATERIALS) 1.Teacher’s preparation: - Lesson plan, Pictures, posters ,textbook,CD-MP3(Computer-Multi projector/cassette/ “sách mềm”) and other materials 2. Students’ preparation: - Textbook, notebook, school things. III/ WORKING ARRANGEMENTS( WAYS OF WORKING ) - Pair work , individual work, group work, T-WC IV/ TEACHING PROCEDURE: 1-Greeting`and checking students’ adtendence: Total: In: ......... Out: .......... . 2-Checking the old lesson 3-New lesson: Teacher’s activities Students’ activities I. Warm up (5'): Brainstorming - Ss work in two big groups A and B. - A student from group A calls out the name of an ethnic group in Viet Nam, then points at one student from group B. This student has to call out the name of another ethnic group. - The game stops when a group cannot give out the name of any ethnic group or when time is up. The group with more ethnic groups wins. - Write this sentences on the board and ask Ss to complete it. - Yes, and they have their own ways of life, and…..and… - Introduce the new lesson - Take part in the game -‘custom’ and ‘traditions’ I.The new lesson Vocabulary(6’) - Teacher use different techniques to teach vocabulary (situation, realia) - Follow the seven steps of teaching vocabulary * Checking vocab: R&R - accept(v): công nhận - generation(n): thế hệ - sharp(adj): chính xác - table manner(n): cách ứng xử ở bàn ăn - presentation(n): sự trình bày - similarity(n): sự tương đồng - compliment(n): lời khen ngợi -you’re kidding!( idiom): bạn nói đùa thế thôi - Repeat in chorus and individually - Copy all the words 1. Listen and read (p38) * Set the scenes: - Look at the picture on page 38 Who can you see in the picture? Pre- question: What do you think the people in the picture are talking about? - T collects ss' ideas - Ask ss listen, read and check their prediction - Play the recording twice. - Check the prediction - Ask ss to practice the conversation in pairs - Answer the questions - Answer by predicting Key: They are talking about the customs and traditions 1a. Find a word/phrasethat means: (p38) - Ask ss to work independently to find the words with the given meanings in the dialogue. - Allow them to share answers before discussing as a class. - Quickly write the correct answers on the board. - Have Ss look at the Watch out! Box and quickly read the information. - Ask if they know any expressions with the same meaning as ‘You’re kidding’. Some other expressions are: You must be kidding!/ You’re joking!/You must be joking! 1b. Tick (V) true (T) or false(F) (p39) - Run through the sentences - Let as read the conversation again to do this exercise. Ask for Ss’ answers as well as the explaination for their choices. - Write the correct answers on the board. - Ask ss to run through the questions -Ask them to work in pairs to ask and answer the question - Correct the answer as a class. 1c. Answer the following questions (p39) - Have Ss read the questions to make sure they understand them. - Ask them firstly to answer the questions without reading the dialogue. - Ss exchange their answers with a classmate. Now ask them to check their answers by reading the dialogue again -Call some Ss to write their answers on the board. - Confirm the correct answers. d. Find these sentences in the conversation and fill in the missing words - Let Ss do this in pairs. - Ask for Ss’ answers and their explainations. Summarise the answer 2.a Match the pictures with the customs and traditions in the box (5’) (p39) - Have Ss look at the pictures. Ask them what they see in each of them. - Now tell Ss that in the box are some customs and traditions of VietNamese people. - Ss read these and identify any new words they do not know. - Explain the new words so that Ss understand the customs and traditions. Ss do this activity in pairs. - Call some Ss to give their answers and write them on the board - Confirm the correct answers. b.Write C (custom) or T(traditions) under each picture in a. In pair, compare your answers (p39) - Ask ss to work individually to decide if the pictures show customs or traditions and compare their answers in pairs. -Their answers may differ. - Have some Ss give the answers to the class and explain their choice. - Work independently to find the words with the given meanings in the dialogue. 1a.Key: 1.accepted 2.generations 3.spot on 4.sharp 5.social 6.table manners 1b.Key: 1.T 2.F( There are also social ones.) 3.T 4.F( There are a lot of customs for table manners in the UK) 1c. A tradition is something special and is passed down through the generations. 5.They should find information about a custom or tradition 1d.Key: 1.Have to: It’s an obiligation – you have no choice 2.Should: It’s a suggestion or advice – it would be best to follow it - Work in pairs 2a. Key: 1.g 2.c 3.f 4.h 5.e 6.a 7.b 8.d 2b. Suggested answers: 1.C 2. C or T 3. C 4.T 5.C 6.C 7. T 8. C or T III. Consolidation (2') 3. Game: customs and traditions experts (p39) - Ask ss to work in groups of five or six. Set a time limit of five minutes. -Ss write down as many local customs and traditions as possible. -The group with the most customs and traditions is the winner. The winning group presents their customs and traditions -. Other groups add more if they can. - Take part in the game IV.
