Lesson 5: Skills 1

 

I/ OBJECTIVES

  • By the end of the lesson, students can Read for specific information about the role of science and technology in the future

Talk about the roles of science and technology

  1. Knowledge:
  2. Grammar: Future tenses : review

                           Reported speech  : statements

  1. Lexical items : vocabulary : Science and technology
  2. Pronunciation:
  3. Skills:

- Listening, Speaking, Reading,Writing and interactive skills

  1. Attitude:

- Cooperation, respect, having right and friendly attitudes with friends, teachers in the new school

  1. Quality and competence:

- Be confident and friendly with the new school environment

- Develope listening, speaking skills and cooperative interaction

II/ TEACHING AIDS (MATERIALS)

1.Teachers preparation:

- Lesson plan, Pictures, posters ,textbook,CD-MP3(Computer-Multi projector/cassette/ “sách mềm”) and other materials

- Textbook, notebook, school things.

 Warm up - 5': Brain storming .

- Write these headings on the board: Health/ Travel/ Homes

- Brainstorm with the class some predictions for future developments in these fields. Encourage Ss to use their imagination. Now open the book and do the reading tasks.

* Teaching vocabulary (6’)

- Teacher use different techniques to teach vocabulary (situation, realia)

- Follow the seven steps of teaching vocabulary

* Checking vocab: Slap the board

 

 

I.  Reading- 15'

1. Match the headings with the passage... (P54)

-  Ask Ss to read the passages quickly for key words and then match with the headings.

2. Underline the following words... (P54)

- Have Ss do the task individually. Then Ss can check their answers in pairs. Elicit the answers from Ss.

3. Answer the question... (Pp54)

-  Ask Ss to read the passages again and answer the questions. Ss can ask and answer in pairs.

- T corrects the answers as a class. If time allows, have Ss show where they found the answers.

II. Speaking - 15'

     Set up the SPEAKING stage by getting Ss to think about the pros and cons of advancements in science and technology. Explain that nothing is ‘black and white’; there are always advantages and disavantages. For example, say:

More and more robots will be invented and used in the fututre. One of the advantages of this is that robots will be able to do dirty or dangerous jobs that humans don’t want to do. At the same time, there are disavantages – robots will replace people in some areas so there will be unemployment.

4.Think about your ideas...(P54)

- Ss work in pairs to think about these pros and cons.

- Encourage Ss to think of as many ideas as possible.

- Move around to give cues and observe.

5. Work in groups...(P54)

- Divide the class into groups of five or six. Each group talks about one of the fields in 4. - Tell Ss to read the example before they start. Encourage them to use the phrase given in the Look out! box.

- While Ss are talking, T goes around to give assistance if necessary.

If time allows, have Ss summarise their group’s ideas and present to the class.
